Promise of Perfect Sunlight
Promise of Perfect Sunlight
The very moment when our worlds met
Our longing for simpler days found rest.
We were two lost travelers knowing the way home
Without saying a word.
The thrum of the bodhran,
Before, almost silent and forgotten,
Pulsed louder, and our smiles danced for each other.
Thunder leapt from my chest into yours.
With blinding lightning from your hazel eyes,
The fire in your heart consumed us both
And I was happy to die with you in my arms those nights.
My heart cried in the soothing rain of your beautiful songs,
Calling my very soul to yours.
We smiled in the cool breeze of our shared laughter
While tight vines reached out from your past
And wound into the memories of my own scars.
Howling like youth in the music of our younger days
We flew through fields of wine, shedding inhibitions.
Painted alone in crowds of bystanders while
Losing ourselves like curious animals.
In silent pillow gazes we had finally come home,
Wondering if our reflect in each other was real.
In each other’s eyes we walked fresh thin paths
And made love in sacred gardens.
Knowing that if it wasn't for our good sense we would end up in Love
Reserving only the feelings that we knew were irreversible,
Holding back was our only regret.
Half of my body, my life, and all of my love left with you.
The pain of our last moments together took my breath.
We left each other with only a promise to hold at night
Until we can be together again.
It won't be long,
It had already been forever.
Then once again these ghosts that push out of my chest
Will find rest and calm,
And we will sleep again,
As one,
In perfect sunlight.

5 haiku

miles away from love
an old tree opened its arms
embracing my pain
still tasting kisses
the rushing waters within
guide me to my sleep
in my arms again
comfortable and drifting peace
with embers burning
words spoken too soon
two careless hearts forsake all
beneath gazing stars
night brushes cool skin
releasing inhibitions
lips in search of heat

The Curse of Eros (A Villanelle)
The Curse of Eros (A Villanelle)
Always too soon, too slow, too fast, too late,
Young Eros takes aim, pulling tight his bow.
True Lovers will discover eternal fate.
Grinning as tension is released and straight
Flies the deeply piercing crimson arrow.
Always too soon, too slow, too fast, too late.
Knowing his prey may never consummate
While bound by promises. Steeped in sorrow
True Lovers will discover eternal fate.
His indifference to joy and pain innate,
He fills with pleasure the wounds we hallow,
Always too soon, too slow, too fast, too late.
Love holds no promises of tomorrow.
When blind Eros strikes, full hearts turn fallow.
True Lovers will discover eternal fate
Always too soon, too slow, too fast, too late.

Rose Peddles
Rose Peddles
in the shapes of flowers around
her favorite baby sitting silent
with nothing but joy on both their faces
she asks her doll if she wants a ride
and giggles at the answer she hears
she puts Rose on the red seat of the tricycle
and walks beside her, helping her
giving serious instructions on how to ride
"don't go into the street, and stay out of
Mr. Potter's yard, you are doing so good"
then she closes here eyes tight
opens her little imagination wide
and let's go
and watches as Rose peddles home...

when my pains get old
when my pains get old
on nights like this
when my own pains are not enough
when i stop believing in all of my disappointments
that pushed and kicked me down this road
when my pains get old
and they no longer make me shake
with fear, dread or sadness
after i get comfortable and realize
that i am too tired to feel them anymore
i need your pain on nights like this
your pain is new and presses deep into my chest
i watch you cry and tremble and i hold you
and i cry and tremble and break
and through these fissures
soak in the feelings that i stop feeling long ago
when my pains get old I have tried
to fill the void with sex
or writing
or aimless conversations with content strangers
i’ve tried alcohol and pacing through
crowded streets at night
walking past heavy sunken eyes in alleyways
taking it all in and keeping the images
always in awe at the way the downtown
gritty streets paint themselves all over me
everyone flowing by possessed by a sense of purpose
with serious focus, even when they’re laughing
in groups, they plod along like a pack of ants
over forgotten cracks and blackened gum
off to the bar, or work
or pushing a shopping cart with only three wheels left
full of treasures and recycling
or off to nowhere at all
just going like their lives depended on it
equally i feel peace and awe on the grass
on the hillside where i watch the hawks below
sweeping low, patiently riding the breeze
with cool sweat on my skin from the climb
and rest in the shade
reciting phrases for later
i’m not empty, but sometimes i miss
the overwhelming urgent crush of devastation and failure
like when you are young
you strive for so much, for your ideal
sprinting toward a goal
or sacrificing for perfect love
wrestling with the guilt of your sins
your passion yearning to be heard
above all the clanging and din
there is so much pain
you put yourself
under so much pressure that life leaks out
squeezed in thick red drops
and you know that there is life inside you
you can see it making a mess of things like a crime scene
but i have tried to make peace with the incorrigible
recognized the absurdity of the bane
forgiven my past sins and accept the sins i willingly commit
and i understand this also
i love broken things most of all
i need you
on nights like this
when my pains get old

.357 Magnum for the Devil
.357 Magnum for the Devil
Gotta .357 Magnum baby
gonna shoot that devil down
Gotta .357 Magnum baby
Gonna cut him down to size
When I find that no good lying son of a gun
I’m gonna shoot a hole right between his eyes
Went down to the pawn shop
And laid my money down
Cause, I know it was the devil baby
It was the devil that made you leave
So I took all the money honey
All the money for the honeymoon
And a couple of dollars I had up my sleeve
And I bought a .357 Magnum
So I could shoot the devil down
Gotta .357 Magnum baby
gonna shoot that devil down
Gotta .357 Magnum baby
Gonna cut him down to size
When I find that no good lying son of a gun
I’m gonna shoot a hole right between his beady little eyes
When the sun came up this morning
Honey I called out your pretty name
When no answer came back to me
I got down upon my knees
I asked the All Mighty where could she be?
Where could she be?
He said “Go ask Charlie down at the pawn shop man,
Charlie knows the whole story, Charlie knows everything!”
So that’s just what I did,
Right after I made a three egg, onion, green bell pepper
Monterey jack, jalapeno, chorizo, bacon and Tobasco omelet
With a side of peanut butter toast
and washed it all down with a mug 2 percent chocolate milk,
maybe I had some Jack Daniel or Sailor Jerry in a dirty snuffer to,
but that’s not “germane to the situation”,
Then I went right down there and said “Charlie!
Charlie, The All Mighty told me while I was on my knees
That you know where my baby is, so please, please, please
You got to sell me a .357 Magnum and tell me where my baby be!”
Then he told me, he said “Let me get you a special gun from the back,
This .357 is gonna work like a charm,
It’ll put a bullet right through the devil himself, as a matter of fact…
I’ll be right back.
After a ruckus and a shuffle I heard that back door slam,
But Charlie came back and said, “alright I’ll tell you but you ain’t gonna believe
Me
You aren’t the only one been talking to the All Mighty, as a matter of fact….
He came to me, that’s right. Woke me up from a dead sleep and told me,
What happened last night was nobody’s fault but the devil,
You can’t blame Charlene, and I said ‘I don’t know what you mean’,
But know I do you see, don’t you see man,
It was the devil that made your baby leave, here’s your gun man,
Good luck man”. And that’s what Charlie said, so now I…I
Gotta .357 Magnum baby
gonna shoot that devil down
Gotta .357 Magnum baby
Gonna cut him down to size
When I find that no good lying son of a gun
I’m gonna shoot a hole right between his beady little eyes
I ran to the preacher man and said you gotta help me,
I woke up this morning and called my baby’s name
But she didn’t answer me so I fell down on my knees,
And begged The Almighty please, please, please,
Where can she be? And the answer came back to me,
Right after a really nice breakfast,
By way of Charlie down at the pawnshop,
The All Mighty told me that it was the devil himself
That drove her away from me
So know I have to find him and I know you know about these things
So what do you have to say about that?
He said “I know exactly what to tell you as a matter of fact…
Hold on, I’ll be right back”
After a ruckus and a shuffle I heard the back door slam,
But the preacher man came back and said,
“Listen hear son, and listen good
The devil is easy to find, he ain’t trying to hide,
I can see it in you boy, you got the devil inside!”
Gotta .357 Magnum baby
gonna shoot that devil down
Gotta .357 Magnum baby
Gonna cut him down to size
When I find that no good lying son of a gun
I’m gonna shoot a hole right between his eyes
So I went back home and got back on my knees,
I’ll deal with the devil once and for all,
This .357 Magnum is gonna do the trick
So I put that gun to my head and pulled the trigger…

Black beady eyed, Snaked skin ugly son of a bitch and shoot him down!
